Science 6
: Science Fair Project (A letter will be coming home with more information):
The purpose of the project is to learn about the Scientific Method and also to allow for individual study. The students may work with a partner or may work alone. The due date for the project will be March 2, 2010. All projects will be marked for a Third Term Science assignment, and some projects may be selected to move on to the next level which is the Regional Science Fair.
There are three different types of projects your child can do: A study, An experiment, or An
Innovation. All three projects should begin with a QUESTION that is to be investigated. The
district’s Science Fair webpage will prove to be very helpful as it lists project ideas and helpful
hints: http://sciencefair.sd73.bc.ca/
A Study: This is basically a detailed research report that answers a question to a Scientific
concept.
An Experiment: One type of experiment is one in which the student replicates an existing
experiment as it was shown or takes an existing experiment and changes/adds some of the
variables. Another type of experiment is where the student designs an original experiment with
one or more variables.
An Innovation: This project involves building a model/structure that already exists to explain the
“Science”. A higher level project would entail improving/adapting/designing existing technology
or equipment and explaining its possible applications.
Regardless of the type of project chosen, all work will be displayed on a large free-standing
project board (The store bought ones can be expensive, but they can recycle a previously used
one or make one using cardboard
